• Diversity in Leadership and the Road to Opportunity

  • Today it is critical to look at leadership in a way that transcends the personality tests and descriptive definitions. Having a grasp of personality and strengths as we understand ourselves as leaders is important but is that all there is to creating a team that is submersed in the leadership principles of collaboration? NO. Leadership is a multifaceted, dynamic, ever-changing phenomenon that comes from our culture, background, belief systems, geographic location, and even generation. With 5 generations in the workforce, more than 50% of graduating dental student being women, and an increasingly diverse population; the definition of leadership must evolve to meet the current status of the workplace. The journey to leadership that meets the requirements of today begins with an inward look at self. Once we define our leadership journey and where it comes from only then can we apply it to the world in which we work and collaborate with co-workers in a meaningful and productive environment.

Learning Objectives

  • Describe the role of diversity in leadership
  • Examine Western's theory of locating self and define a leadership metaphor
  • Assess collaboration based on higher order traits and capitalize on everyday leadership skills

+ Speaker Bio

  • Kara Vavrosky, RDHEP, is a Co-founder and the Chief Content Officer of Today’s RDH. Along with her Co-founders, she saw a need for a dental hygiene digital publication that is for hygienists, by hygienists. Kara strongly feels that dental hygienists have a wealth of knowledge that should be shared to help other dental professionals and the profession as a whole, but needed a platform to do so. It is her goal to help enable those hygienists who want to use their voice to inform and educate their fellow hygienists.

Kara runs the popular Facebook page, Dental Hygiene with Kara RDH. In addition, she can be found on Instagram and Snapchat. Kara also founded the website DentalHygieneAnswers.com where hygienists cannot only ask, but answer other hygienists’ questions so that information can be shared with all.

Kara is a writer of popular articles that share practical advice and tips for hygienists, all in an informative and entertaining way. Beyond light-hearted content, Kara writes researched articles on topics in dental hygiene that educate hygienists on best practices and current protocols.

A graduate of the Oregon Institute of Technology, Kara has a deep passion for spreading knowledge about the importance of oral health and how it relates to the entire body. Kara’s passion extends to helping other hygienists understand the latest protocols, products, and research — all with the goal to push the profession forward. Kara lives in Vancouver, WA with her fiancé Ben, and their rescued Chihuahua fur-babies, Bug & Lily. • Oxygen Please!: Self Care Strategies for the Stressed-out, Burnt-out, Maxed-out

  • In today’s fast-paced, overstressed world, those of us who professionally care for the health and well-being of others often place ourselves at the bottom of the barrel when it comes to self-care. Everyone else’s needs come before our own; both at work and at home. The adage of “patient first” has unintentionally created an environment in health care that places the practitioner last. It makes no sense and often leads to personal and professional burn-out. What if we spin this practice on its head?

Practitioner first. My own physical and mental well-being first. Place the oxygen mask on myself first.

This course empowers health care professionals to make positive choices for their physical and mental selves, resulting in better care for the patients they serve. Health promotion strategies will center on four focus areas: physical wellness, sleep, nutrition, and mental wellness. Healthy practitioners better ensure healthier patients.

Learning Objectives

  • Investigate simple, positive changes you can make to lower your stress levels
  • Explore how exercise, nutrition and sleep affect multiple body systems for health
  • Create a personal plan to increase your overall wellness and better serve your patients
