• New Materials and Systems: Ceramics and 3D Printed Dentures

  • Research and development in the area of glass ceramics and 3D printing continues to advance at a rapid pace. Refinement in the crystal structure of a zirconia glass ceramic has led to the release of new machinable blocks and pressable materials with improved mechanical and physical properties. The development of rapid 3D printing systems combined with advanced polymers has allowed for the production of highly esthetic digital dentures. Printing is markedly faster than machining dentures, however materials for printing have lagged behind machine development. Newly released monomers have superior properties to previous versions with respect to strength, esthetics, and resilience. The fabrication process, properties, handling, and clinical use of both novel ceramics and printed dentures will be reviewed in this presentation.

Learning Objectives

  • Understand the properties of various of glass ceramic materials available for clinical use
  • Understand the handling and finishing procedures of glass ceramic materials
  • Understand the fabrication procedures and properties of printed denture materials
